What is the history of Teatro dell'Olivo?

The theatre’s history reflects several changes in use and design. In 1649, the Accademia dei Deboli asked to reopen the former wool-drying building for comedies and other stage performances. The Compagnia del Teatro dell’Olivo formed in 1772, a turning point in the theatre’s revival.

A third tier of boxes was added in 1880 and removed in 1920; the gallery began as a loggione and was later converted to its present form. Camaiore painter Dino Spelta created the ceiling decorations in 1927.

The building then served as a cinema-theatre from 1930 to 1942, suffered mine damage in 1944 and closed definitively in 1955 after a brief reopening. Restoration brought it back to the public in 2003.
